S 21 NORTH RING CONNECTION OF REGIONAL RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM, BERLIN

At the end of September 2013 OBERMEYER was awarded the contract for the design of a new underground rapid transit line from Berlin Central Station to Potsdamer Platz. The contract comprises the overall planning of the 2nd construction stage for the project “S 21 Regional Rapid Transit System North Ring Connection” including all specialist trades.

The tunnel to be planned is to extend the new tunnel under construction in the first construction stage of the new S 21 at Berlin Central Station. In the area of Potsdamer Platz it connects with the existing tunnel from the year 1936, the so-called “Heuboden”. The aim of the new 2nd construction stage of the Regional Rapid Transit System project is to continue the northern Regional Rapid Transit branches as well as the Berlin inner ring, starting from Berlin Central Station through to Potsdamer Platz.

A technical feature of the project is the required Spree crossing, which will probably take place in the cut-and-cover construction method by inserting the finished tunnel blocks. This is followed by two parallel single-track tunnel tubes, which are to be constructed in the shield tunneling method.
Initially, they will be located below the Spree river and subsequently in the direct zones of influence of the Reichstag and the Brandenburger Tor. Right there, the last new tunnel section will be built in the classical open-cut construction method. Thus, the planning includes the structural crossing of the shield tunnel tubes, built in the 1990s, of the Underground Railway Line U 5 at Brandenburger Tor, for which OBERMEYER had provided the execution planning on behalf of Walter Bau AG.

The contract includes all services for the construction of a functional transport system, especially the engineering facilities, the traffic facilities, the technical equipment, the structural design, the subsoil investigations, the noise and vibration protection, the environmental compatibility, the surveying services as well as the safety concept.

To begin with, OBERMEYER is commissioned with the preliminary planning with an option for the design and approval planning. The preliminary planning is to be completed by the late summer of 2014.
