RAIL BALTICA – one of the rail infrastructure projects of the century

The RB Rail AS, the joint venture of the RAIL BALTICA project, has assigned OBERMEYER with the technical design and designer supervision services for construction of the last Estonian section of the RAIL BALTICA main line.

RAIL BALTICA is the largest infrastructure project in the Baltic region of the last 100 years and at the same time one of the European Union's priority infrastructure projects. The 870 km electrified line will be designed to carry both passengers and freight.

The project which involves five countries oft he European Union will integrate the Baltic States into the European railway network. This is done by adapting the Russian to the European track gauge. Futhermore a high speed connection between the different countries is important to optimize transport and business in the region.

There is an agreement about the need to eliminate the missing north-south rail link. This is the only way to ensure the full integration of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania into the European railway area.

OBERMEYER together with the PROINTEC S.A., a Spanish civil engineering company, supplied the concept which is now to be implemented for a 93,5 km long high-speed section in Estland. Now the entire Estonian RAIL BALTICA main line is in the technical design stage. The entire planning, both for the routing and the engineering structures, is carried out using the latest digital tools by applying Building Information Modeling (BIM).

During the next 27 months, the consortium will complete geotechnical investigations and prepare a detailed technical concept for the construction of the railway substructure and superstructure as well as for the railway infrastructure. After the design works have been completed the consortium continues to provide designer supervision services during construction stage of the project.
